Aiming High Watersports Family Day

Published on May 28, 2009

Mitcham-based charity Jigsaw4U organised a special watersports day on May 28 for children and youngsters with disabilities from schools in Sutton at Wimbledon Park, funded by Sutton Disability Partnership. This is the first of several days planned by Jigsaw4u during the summer school holidays. Other activities will include football, drama, arts and crafts and drumming.

Over 30 youngsters, aged from five to 19, attended the watersports day, as well as their parents and siblings. They enjoyed the bell boats and sailing boats, supported by the staff of the Wimbledon Park Watersports team.

For those not involved in the watersports, the Sutton Sports Development team organised football, boxing and rounders. Lizzy Webster, Jigsaw4u’s children’s participation worker, who organised the event with her colleague Sue Clark, said “It was a successful day. Comments included ‘I enjoyed the sailing the most because it made me feel ore independent’ and ‘absolutely fantastic’. We hope more Sutton young people with disabilities are able to take up free places on our other activity days.”

The activities were chosen as a result of Lizzy and Sue asking youngsters for ideas when they visited specialist schools and units for children with disabilities.

Jigsaw4u hopes to organise a similar programme of events next year subject to funding.
