Going the distance: The Three Peaks Challenge

Set against the backdrop of the highest mountains in Great Britain, Chris Tunnicliffe will tell his story in a series of upcoming articles, as he prepares to take on a climbing trek spanning 40kms and 2,984m of ascent and descent – all within 24 hours!

"I am attempting the 3 peaks challenge in May 2010 to raise funds for my charity Jigsaw4u, for which I sit on the North West Development Panel. Our key objectives are to support children in the UK who have been affected by grief, loss or trauma - anything from the loss of a parent, to having been forced to work in the sex industry or been abused. This is happening on our doorstep, not just in big cities, but in suburbs and provincial towns. It is in these often forgotten places where Jigsaw4u focus our efforts in order to make a difference to these children's lives."

"In brief, the aim is to climb the highest peak in Scotland, England and Wales within one 24 hour period –that’s Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike and Snowdon. There must be a minimum of 10 hours driving time taken to complete the challenge legitimately and to ensure it really is a physical challenge, rather than just how fast you can drive!"

"It’s great for me personally. Those of you who know me will acknowledge that I'm carrying an extra pound or two at the moment! - just shy of 21 stone at the start of my training programme. On expert advice, I need to shed between 6 and 7 stone over the next 9 months in order to complete the challenge successfully . I've already started a rigorous training regime with the help of both a personal trainer and squash coach..."

"The £10,000 target is ambitious, but I hope you will dig deep and give generously to a charity whose' work actually takes place on your doorstep."

"Thank you, in advance, for your support."
