Rubbish matters to Jigsaw4u
Published on April 20, 2010
They say one person's rubbish is another person’s treasure - this is certainly true for national children’s charity Jigsaw4u who have just launched a new Recycling Appeal that will turn old mobile phones and used printer cartridges into much needed funds for the organisation.
Anne Davies, chief executive of Jigsaw4u, said: "Fundraisers traditionally call for donations of money, but not ours! Instead, we want items usually placed in the bin."
"With fancy new mobiles coming onto the market every month, people are replacing their handsets more than ever. The old ones usually end up binned, or are thrown in a cupboard or drawer, adding to the millions of redundant mobiles piling up across Europe."
Jigsaw4u, which helps provide support for children, young people, and families affected by grief, loss, and trauma, is running their fundraising recycling campaign in partnership with experts at the Recycling Appeal, who will give cash for every mobile phone donated. Money can also be earned for used inkjets. Considering more than 1.1 billion inkjet cartridges are used around the world, the fundraising potential is tremendous!
Anne Davies continues: "Lots of offices bin their inkjet and toner cartridges too – why not donate them instead? You'll be helping our valuable work, and you'll be helping the environment at the same time."
When mobiles and cartridges are binned they end up in landfill sites where they can cause pollution – as they slowly break down, chemicals can leak into the surrounding soil. By recycling them, you protect the environment.
Rob Morton of the Recycling Appeal says:
"Throwing away old mobile phones and used printer cartridges sends them to landfill sites where they become part of our nation’s growing waste problem. The vast majority of mobile phones contain toxic substances, which can leak into the surrounding soil and pollute it, and printer cartridges take hundreds of years to biodegrade. Why not use these products for something good? Send them to the Jigsaw4u Recycling Appeal and they will be refurbished and re-used. Some of the mobile phones even end up in developing countries where little or no landline infrastructure exists meaning your old mobile could provide a lifeline for someone."
