Home School Links

Since 2004 the Home School Links project has provided schools with Child and Family Support Workers to support their students and parents.

The Jigsaw4u Home School Links Service has been operating in London schools since 2004.  Home School Links provide schools with Child and Family Support Workers to support their students and parents.  Child and Family Support Workers are specialists in working with children and young people and have therapeutic backgrounds including:

  • Play Therapy
  • Drama Therapy
  • Art Therapy
  • Systemic Therapy
  • Accredited Parenting Programmes (CYP/IAPT)
  • Family Therapy
  • Mindfulness

Jigsaw4u employ a large team of Home School Links Child and Family Support Workers who are currently working in over 30 schools across Merton and Sutton

Reasons for referrals vary, but include the following:

  • Disruptive behaviour in the classroom
  • Parental mental/physical health issues
  • Social issues/communication difficulties/friendship problems/isolation
  • Social services involvement with family
  • Trauma/abuse/neglect

Child and Family Support Workers provide regular emotional and behavioural support to children in schools who have been identified as being of concern and where parents have given consent for us to see their child.  We aim to help children and young people deal with the things that worry them, raise their self-esteem and control their difficult feelings so that they can maximise their learning potential in school.  We also work with their families to overcome the underlying causes for the children’s difficulties.  Jigsaw4u measure the impact of this work through the Outcomes Star measuring tool and provide each school with an end of year report.

Our Child and Family Support Workers Offer:

  • Weekly sessions with children with emotional and/or behavioural problems
  • Small group work for children with specific issues (anger, social skills etc.)
  • Support for parents through individual and group sessions
  • Consultation with school staff and referral on to other agencies
  • Lunch time drop in sessions for students

Working with parents is an important element of Home School Links.  Addressing family issues and encouraging communication between parents and children results in much better outcomes for the young people we work with.

We are also able to run drop-in sessions for parents who might need to talk through a problem concerning their child, or need signposting to an appropriate agency.

Home School Links generally offer short-term interventions (6 to 12 sessions over a term) but where there are serious concerns we can work with children and families for longer periods of time, up to a year in some cases.  Sessions can continue over school holidays, when we can see the children at our Jigsaw4u offices or visit families at home.

Children and young people working with Home School Links can also access Jigsaw4u activities such as music or art days, seaside trips, football matches or theatre visits.

Jigsaw4u employ 9 Home School Links Child and Family Support Workers who are currently working in 18 schools in Merton, 4 in Sutton and 2 in Hammersmith and Fulham.

Jigsaw4u has well-established group work programmes for children. We offer transition, anger management, friendship, social skills and self-esteem groups to children identified by the schools as needing help in these areas.  Some schools utilise our lunch time drop-ins for the children, which has proved especially useful for year groups where major friendship issues have been identified.

Working with parents is an important element of Home School Links.  Addressing family issues and encouraging communication between parents and children results in much better outcomes for the young people we work with.

Some of our staff are trained to run accredited parenting programmes and are able to offer a range of individual and group work to parents around positive parenting issues to suit the needs of each school.

We are also able to run drop-in sessions for parents who might need to talk through a problem concerning their child, or need signposting to an appropriate agency.

Child and Family Support Workers can help develop CASA’s and EHCP’s, access other services, address housing issues and liaise with social care.  Child and Family Support Workers are experienced in acting as Lead Professional with families, as well as convening and chairing TAC or TAF meetings when necessary.

Home School Links offers consultation to school staff, not about the children that are referred to us but others that are of concern.  We are also able to help the schools refer children into CAMHS if this is necessary following our intervention.

Jigsaw4u Home School Links is available through individual schools who commission the service.  The schools where we are currently based are listed in the toggle below.

All referrals can only be made through the head teacher of each school we are in or their designated person, such as the SENCO.

If a parent would like their child to be referred, they should talk to staff at their school.  Home School Links are also able to deliver individual work for children who do not attend the schools we are based via our spot purchase referral route.

If a school, or any other agency, would like to commission the Home School Links Service please contact Stephen at the Jigsaw4u head office on 020 8687 1384.
